Abstract : Well despite being in the heart of the venture capital industry and start-up ecosystem many foundersand executives in Silicon Valley do not know how VC firms and banks are structured, managed, and how decisions are made. Many are unprepared for seeking appropriate funding from VC’s or bankers.

Funding and adequate capital are keys to success and survival for all businesses. We are all familiar with the funding success stories of firms like Cisco, eBay, Google, and Facebook and they make it look so easy to raise funds; however, behind all the success stories are stores of wasted time and lost opportunity.

This presentation covers how VC firms and banks operate. You will learn how investment and credit decisions are made, and how to get to the decision makers. You will learn from an insider on how to best position your company to seek equity and debt funding in the U.S. or internationally. Be better prepared to navigate through the VC and banking industry and be able to successfully raise the equity or debt capital needed to fund your business. Bio: Herman White has been working with technology companies and startups throughout Silicon Valley, the US and Asia for over 20 years. Prior to joining Tech CU, he was a co-founder and Partner at CrossBridge Venture Partners, where he invested in such companies as Good Technology (acquired by Motorola), eSilicon, Bytemobile, Orchestria (acquired by CA Technologies), eFriendsNet (acquired by Meetic) and HedgeStreet (acquired by IG Group). Before founding CrossBridge, Herman worked in a variety of positions at Silicon Valley Bank, and was also involved in venture debt and venture lending to early stage companies. Earlier in his career, Herman worked in technology lending, project finance, public finance, trade finance, real estate finance, and international banking at The Sumitomo Bank, Limited and Mercantile Bank, N.A.

Herman holds a BA in Economics from The University of Utah and a Masters in International Management from Thunderbird School of Global Management. He was formerly a Director of Thunderbird’s North America Alumni Council. Herman is a frequent speaker to groups on such topics as startups and entrepreneurship.

Along with his passion for working with entrepreneurs and making early stage investments, Herman enjoys spending time with his family.
